Researching Harry GRIFFITH, his wife Elsie Nellie, and their son Lawrence Clayton. They are listed in the 1900 and 1910 DuPage, IL Census. Harry was born July 1863 MD, Elsie April 1863, VA, and Lawrence May 1880, OH. Harry is my Dad's step-grandfather, and we have used the GRIFFITH surname. Family s tories claim that Harry met Mr. WRIGLEY, and helped to form the WRIGLEY Chewing Gum Co. Harry supposedly was crooked and Wrigley kicked him out. (Elsie also eventually kicked him out!) After that Harry started his own company c. 1920--my Dad remembers Griffith's Piney Chewing Gum. Harry died in a DuPage Co. poor farm c. 1936 or 1937. Can any information be found on Harry? He sounds like an interesting character.

My GGGgrandparents William & Johanna Baltz moved to DuPage County from New York City sometime between 8/1850 and 1853. William's occupation was listed as Baker in the 1850 New York Census. They brought a son William(age 16 in 1860), and while in DuPage they had two sons, Walter(know it starts with W, but not sure if it's Walter) around 1852/53 and Henry on 11/21/1856, and a daughter, Augusta born around 1854/55. Johanna and the children are listed in the 1860 Census living in Bloomingdale. This leads me to believe that the father, William, died sometime between 1856 and July 1860 in DuPage County. I believe William, the son, served in the 8th cavalry in company D and was then transfered to company M during the Civil War, if this is of any assistance to my query. I was wondering if anyone knew of my family, if William did indeed die in DuPage county, and if I would be able to get a copy of his death certificate or something similar. Thanks

I am looking for the descendents of certain FRANTISEK VILIMEK. He was of Bohemian origin (born 1884 in Budislav, parish Mladocov, district Litomysl), my father?s cousin who emigrated between 1900 - 1913 (most probable year 1911) with his sister MARIA VILIMEK to Chicago area, is said to have been a baker in Berwyn (not sure it was really Berwyn), he married in the USA and childrens were born there. His son (FRANK as well) liberated Czechoslovakia with Patton?s Army and came in late autumn 1945 to my ancestor?s house in east Bohemia to say hello. The last information we have is form the year 1950. We have a picture having been sent from BENSENVILLE, IL. The picture is showing three persons: two older ladies and a man in his forties. The text was written by one of the ladies, she seems to have been the widow after FRANTISEK VILIMEK Sr. and she informs that her son is in the middle, whereas the other lady is her sister Ludmila. She mentioned as well the family had a sommer house in Ruskin, FL. Did anybody know this VILIMEK family ?
Are there any family mambers still living ?
Thanks for any help, any advice.

Looking for descendents of the ELLIS sisters who, with their spouses, migrated from Bath, OH to the Naperville area in the 1830s-1840s. Emeline Ellis married Ashley COLT. I thought my grandparents Nicklaus and Rosa Fisseneck lived in Lemont, Cook. The are buried in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Lemont and my mother and her brothers and sisters all went to school there. My mother graduated from Lemont High School in 1920. Both my grandparents were born in Germany but I haven't found anything yet. My problem is Cook County doesn't seem to have any records on marriage, naturalization or my mother's birth in 1903. It appears they may have lived in DuPage County which I understand is just across the Des Plaines River. I found the same cemetery information on the Fissenecks on your DuPage Genealogy Society Web Page that I found at the Lemont Historical Society records. The Church cemetery, which I visited and found headstones, is in Cook County, isn't it? I plan to write DuPage County Records for my grandfather's death certificate(01 Sept 1920) and his marriage to Rosa Dubinska(Rubinska?).

My paternal grandfather, CARL BARTELS, was born in DuPage County, (I think!) on 7-28-1868, near Schaumberg IL.
His mother was CHARLOTTE (BUETHE) BARTELS, b 3-24-1847 in perhaps Oldenburg, Germany. She arrived in the US in 1858. She married H Heinrich Bartels, b 6-26-1841. I don't know the date of the marriage; but since my grandfather Carl was the oldest, born 1868, they were probably married some time before 7-28-68. Thank you.

I have several ancestors that lived in Elmhurst. I am trying to figure out the cemetary and the funeral home used by most of the family. It sounds like both names have changed. My mother believes the cemetary was Oak Lawn, but is now called Homewood memorial Garden. Is that correct? The funeral home was Robillard and we are uncertain if it has changed ownership or closed. My great-grandfather was E. Norman Brydges who designed many local buildings in the late teens- 40's? in the area. The families I am looking for are Brydges and Sherman. Thanks for your help.

PYE, SUTCHER (SHUTCHER) - My gggg-grandparents, Austin PYE and Elizabeth SUTCHER (or SHUTCHER) were married in Downers Grove on March 13, 1848. Austin owned a sawmill on the Chicago river. Lumber was brought from Williams Bay, WI by horse and team and then floated down the river to the mill. When he died his wife traded the sawmill for a berry farm in Michigan! Their daughter, my ggg-grandmother Alice Pye married Silas Thomas BAKER. She died in childbirth in about 1871. I believe the baby died as well. I am trying to find the origins of the PYE and SUTCHER (SHUTCHER) families. These are the only names we have. I will gladly exchange any info that I have or find.

My gggg-grandparents, Matthew TUBBS and Ruth Martha LORD were married in Warrenville sometime before my ggg-grandmother, Olive Jane Marion TUBBS was born there on February 8, 1839. Ruth Martha LORD was born around 1808. She was the daughter of James LORD and Elizabeth (maiden unknown). According to Olive's census and marriage information she claims her mother was either from New York, Ohio, or Rhode Island. According to family history Matthew TUBBS' father was named Benjamin. Supposedly Matthew was born in the Rainy River region on the border of Minnesota and Ontario. Supposedly his father came from Tubbs Hollow, New York. I have found a couple of Tubbs Hollows in Pennsylvania but so far no luck. I would appreciate any leads in DuPage county to find where these people really came from. I will gladly share family group sheets, copies of obituaries, copies of certificates, any information that I have or obtain.

SABIN - Sylvanus Sabin, his wife Marcy Stanton Sabin, and their children and spouses migrated to Illinois in the early 1830s and settled in DuPage, Kane and Will Counties. I have the names of their childen and spouses, but I've run across several other SABINS that were in that part of Illinois at the same time and are unidentified. Sylvanus Sabin's nephew, Walter SABIN, m. Margaret Rhodes, died in Glynn Ellen, DuPage County April 8, 1907. Does anyone know anything about children from this marriage? Does anyone know these Sabins: Matilda Stolp SABIN, 1845-1909, buried in Big Woods Cemetery; Ellen F. Sabin, 1849-1927, married Knapp, buried in York Township; Jane Antone Sabin, m. Peter Lee March 16, 1854 in DuPage County.

four Luthin birth dates - I live in Arkansas but lived most of my life in DuPage County, (as did my father, My Grandfather and my Great Grandfather Luthin. Joseph came from Alsace we think. The other males were born in DuPage County probably in Downers Grove Township or Hinsdale. I will be up to the Chicago area around the first of November. Where would I find information on some of my relatives. Could I write to the County? If I did write, would they tell me if the information is available and then I would send my money and self adddressed envelope? I would really like copies of birth certifcates if that is possible. The names I am interested in at this time are Joseph Luthin, Christian Luthin, Carrie Luthin and Sally Luthin. Would Immigration and Naturalization records be available? NOTE: The birth and naturalizations are in different buildings at the county complex just west of Wheaton. They open at 8:00 and close at 4:30. Wheaton Public Library is another good source (a list of Dupage books are on the webpage. DCGS volunteers are at the library on friday nights. The naturalization records were just entered into a computer (by DCGS) for them to do an easy search. Hinsdale is part in Cook County (just a warning).

I am researching my ancestors who were from DuPage County, Ill, and have been to this site many times. The GenWeb project is great. I found the Marriages-DuPage, 1839-1861 very interesting and useful. However, I have found an error which I didn't know who to tell, so when I found your e-mail address I decided to write you...
The item of discrepancy is the marriage of Stephen Blank, Nov 9, 1850 to Bethona McMillan, record #627. This is my 2nd gr-granduncle, brother to my gr-gr-grandmother, Lydia Blank, whose marriage is listed on this same page, record #919.
I have records to back up my correction to the error in the listing of Stephen's brides name. Her name was actually Parthenia McMillan, Not Bethona McMillan. Her twin sister was Cecelia McMillan, who married William Adams, record #506.
These two couples traveled the Oregon Trail in 1852 to Forest Grove, Oregon. My gr-gr-grandmother, Lydia Blank, came with her husband, George Henry Spencer in abt 1855. I have several family records which give her name as Parthenia; I also have a copy of a letter she wrote to my grandmother, signed , Aunt P. Blank. I also have a copy of Stephen Blank's obituary which says: ' Mr Blank was born in New York State, and as a boy went to Illinois, where he was married in 1850 to Miss Parthenia E. McMillan.
I would appreciate your passing this information along to the necessary people so that corrections can be made. Thanks for your help.

NOTE: All of the marriage records have been reviewed and are being recompiled. "Official" records can and do have mistakes. Transcribed lists can only show what is on the list, not what is believed to be correct. Jeff

Yackley Family History - I am hoping to find out how and where to obtain information about my family history. I have found 2 of the marriages although am getting conflicting information as the the names and am in need of finding out if the two women were related. The women in question showed up on your dpcmarr5.txt of marriage records for DuPage county. Surname: Yackley, Charles married Mary Baumeiste 6-4-1857 Yackley, Joseph married Magdalena Baumeiste 1-31-1852 I have had conflicting information in that the last name of the women is "Baumeister" with relation to these same marriages, and that the two women did not have the same parents. Can you help me? I am also looking for the best possible route to find out any information on my great grandfather Joseph Francis Yackley who was the assistnat supervisor of Lisle township for over 5 terms. The Yackley Farm was located at 1812 Ogden Avenue, and all the persons I am looking for are the decendents of John Yackley and Helen Staley (possibly Stayley). I am not sure where to turn to find out what information is correct. According to all that I have had access to, there are quite a variety of discrepancies. My grandfather was Joseph Francis Yackley Jr. and my father was the III. According to the World Family Tree, my grandfather did not exist in the family I was told he was born into. How can I clear this up?

Just wanted to invite everyone whose researching early DuPage County and other Northern Illinois counties to visit my new genealogy website at: patsabin.com/dupage/NapervillePioneers.html
My primary families were SABIN and ELLIS, but most of their children were daughters, so there were a lot of surnames...JONES, VAUGHN, HOWARD, and many others, as well as many other related families who made this migration from New England in the early 1830s-1840s. Check out "Family Lines"- New England Families Who Migrated to Northern Illinois.
Also, I have included passages from my great-grandfather's diaries of his college years in Naperville in the 1870s, and the full text of his sister's early memories of their 1850s childhood in Naperville. They both have some great descriptions of early life in DuPage!
Please let me know if you connect with any of these families, but most of all, enjoy your visit!

Mahala Thurston - My great great grandmother Mahala (HOWARD) RATLIFF THURSTON (twice widowed) was last known to be in Peoria IL 1862. I have lost contact with her, but have recently been told that a Mahala J. Thurston married 3 Jul 1871 to a Harvey Ferrel in DuPage county, license 4952 V8. Could some kind soul tell me if she was listed as a widow? or where she was living? She was reported as age 47 in the 1860 Peoria census and could neither read nor write, so would be about 58 when married.

My Grandfather was born in Big Woods, Illinois in 1903 or 1904. I am trying to identify the Township that Big Woods was/is located in. I have been unsuccessful locating a map with this level of detail. Thanks for your help.

I am interested in the family of Henry Stubbings & Bertha Kerschbaum. Henry was born in England but emmigrated to Illinois. Henry ran a large greenhouse/nursery in Lyons, Cook County. I know for certain that they had three daughters and one son. Another source has indicated a possible additional two sons.
The daughters are Nellie (7/8/1893 - 12/23/1966), who m. William John Reuss;
Maud (March 4, 1891 - March 1976), who never married; and
Gertrude (11/16/1892 - 10/1976), who married Juline Daeschner (b. 7/19/1897 d.9/1972).
Maud and Gertrude were teachers. Maud was also an author of childrens books. Gertrude and Juline had no children. There was the Gertrude Daeschner Library named after Gert.
Apparantly, the son I know about, died after having started a family, but predeceasing his parents. Consequently, the sons family did not recieve any of the estate. To make up for this oversight, Maud & Gert both left their estates to their nephew. Maud, Gert & Nellie lived the last parts of their lives together in Wheaton, Du Page County.

I am searching for HERBERT GRANT from Batavia, Il, who would have been 3 yrs old in 1860 census. In the census index for DuPage in York Township I found a family with a 3 year old male child with abbreviation of a name shown as "HAPPRT." at reference # 2171/2219 in the family of WILLIAM GRANT. Herbert married ELIZA JANE NICHOLS in 1877 in DeKalb Co. Any information on this family would be appreciated.
